Medical - Behind the Scenes at the College Football National Championship

Behind the Scenes at the College Football National Championship

By Donald E. Fowler, MD, OrthoAtlanta

College football is big in Georgia. It was over the top this year as the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship brought two SEC-teams, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the University of Georgia Bulldogs together to crown a national college football champion.

OrthoAtlanta orthopedic and sports medicine specialists was honored to be selected as the official sports medicine partner of the Atlanta Football Host Committee (AFHC). OrthoAtlanta physicians and administrative staff worked collaboratively with the AFHC to service the medical needs for the nationally-televised college football playoff held in Atlanta’s $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium in early January 2018.

Four OrthoAtlanta physicians, including Dr. Donald Fowler of OrthoAtlanta’s Paulding office, were on the field on game day, and were available 24/7 in the days leading up to the big game, to provide medical services to the players, coaches, and staff of both teams and game officials. Planning and preparation for the event viewed by fans across the country was many months in planning, but short turn in the execution, including the need for top medical services. With less than seven days from the New Year’s Day playoff games to the national championship, our physicians, athletic trainers and administrative staff worked seamlessly with the host committee management.

Final game day attendance was 77,430, including dignitaries, business and government leaders, two college football teams and their fans from around the country. Hosting the GA Events of this magnitude requires immense coordination, event management savvy, and a multitude of specialty services including the expert orthopedic and sports medicine expertise provided by OrthoAtlanta. OrthoAtlanta annually partners with the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Atlanta Gladiators Hockey, and the BB&T Atlanta Open tennis championship, so we were pleased to provide our services to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
